After years of reasonable waiting
he finally came forth with a vengeance
 and smashed every single image
 of himself
 that he had seen,
 oh so many times,
 not in a mirror,
but in the faces of the people watching him.

Left and right he now looks,
 hunched in the windowless hallway
right in front of his door.

Keys and change are in his pockets,
he must not forget his hat,
 it’s cold outside.

 Consciously,
he breathes in and walks out
 into the world
 to go and search
 for a real mirror.
